Coventry Transport Museum

About

Coventry Transport Museum is one of Britain’s great automotive collections, celebrating the city that once produced more cars and bicycles than anywhere else in the world. Its galleries trace over 200 years of innovation, from early bone‑shakers and penny‑farthings to sleek Jaguars and iconic Triumphs. The museum holds the world’s largest public collection of British‑made vehicles, making it a must‑see for anyone interested in engineering or design. A standout attraction is the pair of Thrust land‑speed record cars. Thrust2 and ThrustSSC—the latter the first car to break the sound barrier in 1997—are displayed with dramatic lighting and immersive sound, capturing the intensity of supersonic speed. Nearby, the Cycling Gallery showcases Coventry’s role as the birthplace of the modern bicycle, including early safety bikes and elegant Victorian models. The museum’s Boomtown Gallery recreates Coventry’s industrial heyday with factory sounds, tools and stories from workers who powered the city’s motor industry. Visitors can also explore wartime vehicles, classic buses, commercial vans and a strong collection of motorcycles. Interactive exhibits include a 4D land‑speed simulator, hands‑on engineering stations and family‑friendly discovery zones.

Location

The address is Coventry Transport Museum, Millennium Place, Hales Street, Coventry CV1 1JD. It sits on Millennium Place next to Coventry city centre, easy to reach on foot from the main shopping area. It is there because Coventry was once the heart of the British car industry, and it now holds the largest collection of British made road transport in public ownership. Because it is so central you have loads within a couple of minutes walk. Right next door is the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum with art, history and the Lady Godiva story, and Coventry Cathedral with its famous new cathedral and the ruins of the old one left as a memorial from the Blitz. You can also stroll to St Mary's Guildhall, a beautiful medieval guildhall with a 500 year old tapestry, the Priory Visitor Centre and Undercrofts, the Coventry Music Museum celebrating Two Tone and ska, and Broadgate with the Lady Godiva statue and clock. If you want something grander, Coombe Abbey, a former medieval abbey with a country park, is just outside the city, and Warwick Castle, one of England's great castles, is about 20 minutes away. The Belgrade Theatre and Coventry Canal Basin are also close by for a full day in the city.
