Stansted House

About

Stansted House is one of West Sussex’s most graceful country estates, a Palladian mansion rebuilt in 1900 after a devastating fire and set within 1,800 acres of parkland on the Hampshire–Sussex border. Its serene symmetry, long avenues and wooded landscape give it a timeless, almost continental elegance. Inside, the house reflects the taste of the Ponsonby family, who restored Stansted in the early 20th century. The Blue Drawing Room and White Hall showcase refined neoclassical decoration, gilded mirrors and delicate plasterwork. The Library, lined with dark wood and filled with family volumes, offers a glimpse into the intellectual life of the estate. The Dining Room displays fine silver, portraits and a striking marble fireplace, while the Grand Staircase rises beneath a lantern dome that fills the hall with soft natural light. Stansted is also known for its Chapel, a peaceful space with stained glass and carved wood that reflects the estate’s long spiritual history. Throughout the house, personal objects—photographs, letters, travel souvenirs—give it a lived‑in warmth unusual for a mansion of this scale. Outside, the Walled Gardens are a highlight: herbaceous borders, fruit trees, glasshouses and quiet lawns arranged with classical precision.
