Arundel Museum

About

Arundel Museum offers a compact yet richly detailed journey through the long history of this West Sussex market town, set just steps from the River Arun and in the shadow of Arundel Castle. Though modern in design, the museum’s galleries are filled with artefacts that trace local life from prehistoric settlement to the present day, revealing how the town’s identity has been shaped by river trade, craftsmanship and its powerful ducal estate. Inside, visitors can explore displays on Roman pottery, Saxon burial finds and medieval guilds, alongside evocative objects from Arundel’s Victorian shops and workshops. The museum’s collection of tools, domestic items and photographs paints a vivid picture of everyday life, while the “Arundel Through Time” gallery uses models and maps to show how the town evolved around its castle and cathedral. One of the most interesting facts is the story of Arundel’s long‑lost port: once a bustling hub for shipbuilding and trade, now remembered through maritime artefacts and scale models. Another highlight is the preserved jail cell from the old town hall, offering a glimpse into 19th‑century justice. With its mix of archaeology, social history and local stories, Arundel Museum provides a grounded, intimate counterpoint to the grandeur of the castle above.
