East Grinstead Museum

About

East Grinstead Museum offers a thoughtful and quietly compelling look at the town’s long history, with a particular focus on medicine, community life and local resilience. Set near the Queen Victoria Hospital, the museum is best known for its connection to the pioneering work of Sir Archibald McIndoe and the Guinea Pig Club—RAF airmen who underwent groundbreaking reconstructive surgery during the Second World War. Their story gives the museum a unique emotional depth, blending medical innovation with human courage. Inside, visitors can explore galleries tracing East Grinstead’s development from prehistoric settlement to market town. Archaeological finds, domestic objects and early maps reveal how the area grew around trade routes and woodland industries. The “Town and People” displays highlight everyday life through photographs, tools and personal memorabilia, offering a warm sense of community identity. The McIndoe and Guinea Pig Club exhibition is the standout feature. Original medical instruments, personal letters and patient stories illustrate how the hospital became a world leader in plastic surgery. One of the most interesting facts is that the club continued for decades after the war, forming a lifelong support network for its members.
