Nostell Priory

About

Nostell Priory in West Yorkshire is an elegant Palladian mansion set within sweeping parkland designed by Capability Brown. Built for the Winn family in the 18th century, it is celebrated for its exceptional interiors and one of the finest collections of Thomas Chippendale furniture anywhere in the world. The house feels both grand and intimate, with rooms that reveal the tastes, ambitions and daily rhythms of a wealthy Georgian household. Inside, visitors can explore the opulent State Rooms, where gilded ceilings, rich textiles and Chippendale masterpieces create a unified artistic vision. The Library is a highlight, holding rare volumes and exquisite cabinetry. The Crimson Room showcases original wallpapers and delicate rococo details, while the Breakfast Room offers a more personal glimpse into family life. The Picture Gallery displays works by Kauffman, Reynolds and other leading artists of the period. One of the most interesting facts is that Chippendale supplied furniture specifically designed for Nostell, making the house a rare example of a complete, site‑specific commission. Another standout is the 18th‑century Doll’s House, a beautifully crafted miniature mansion filled with tiny furnishings. Outside, the gardens feature a lakeside walk, a restored kitchen garden and the striking Brewhouse, adding layers of landscape history to the visit.
