Smith Art Gallery in Brighouse is a compact but characterful cultural space housed within the town’s Victorian library building. Established through the philanthropy of Alderman William Smith, it reflects a tradition of civic pride: Smith donated his personal art collection to inspire public learning, making the gallery one of Calderdale’s earliest community art institutions. A charming detail is that many early works were chosen not for prestige but for their educational value, helping residents encounter landscapes, portraits and historical scenes for the first time. Inside, the gallery presents a rotating programme of exhibitions that blend local heritage with contemporary creativity. Its permanent collection includes 19th‑ and early 20th‑century paintings, watercolours and prints, often featuring Yorkshire scenery and artists connected to the region. The community exhibitions are a defining feature, giving space to emerging artists, schools and local groups, which keeps the gallery’s atmosphere lively and inclusive. Visitors can also explore displays linked to Brighouse’s industrial past, including objects and artworks that reflect the town’s textile and engineering heritage. Though modest in scale, Smith Art Gallery offers an intimate, welcoming environment where art feels accessible and rooted in local identity.
