The Hepworth Wakefield

About

The Hepworth Wakefield is one of West Yorkshire’s most striking modern art museums, celebrated as much for its architecture as for its collections. Designed by David Chipperfield and opened in 2011, the building’s angular concrete forms echo the industrial landscape of the River Calder. A compelling fact is that the museum stands near the spot where Barbara Hepworth, one of Britain’s most influential sculptors, was born—making it a rare example of a major gallery rooted directly in an artist’s hometown. Inside, the museum offers an exceptional collection of Hepworth’s work, including plaster prototypes, working models and carvings that reveal her evolving ideas about form, space and abstraction. These pieces are displayed alongside personal tools and studio materials, giving visitors an intimate sense of her creative process. The galleries also showcase modern and contemporary art from the 20th century to today, with works by Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and international artists who expand the dialogue between sculpture, painting and installation. Regular temporary exhibitions transform the museum with bold, experimental displays.
