Bowood House

About

Bowood House in Wiltshire is an elegant Georgian country house set within one of England’s most beautiful landscaped estates. Home to the Lansdowne family for over 250 years, it is renowned for its sweeping parkland designed by Capability Brown. A fascinating fact is that Bowood was the site of a major scientific breakthrough: in 1774, Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in a laboratory within the estate, a moment that changed the course of modern chemistry. Inside, Bowood offers a refined journey through aristocratic life. The State Rooms display fine art, period furniture and family portraits, including works by Reynolds and Gainsborough. The Library, with its rich wood panelling and thousands of volumes, reflects the intellectual interests of generations of Lansdownes. The Laboratory Room, preserved as a tribute to Priestley’s work, is one of the estate’s most unusual and historically significant spaces. Visitors can also explore the Gardens, where terraces, sculptures and flower borders frame views across the lake. The Italianate Garden and Arboretum add seasonal colour, while the tranquil woodland walks reveal hidden follies and sweeping vistas.
