Malvern Museum of Local History

About

Malvern Museum of Local History occupies one of the most atmospheric buildings in the town: the medieval Priory Gatehouse, once the main entrance to Malvern Priory. Its thick stone walls, timber ceilings and narrow stairways create an immediate sense of stepping back through centuries of local life. The museum explores Malvern’s evolution from a monastic settlement to a celebrated Victorian spa resort, famed for its “healing waters” and dramatic hillside scenery. Inside, visitors can discover the story of the Malvern water cure, which drew aristocrats, writers and scientists during the 19th century. Exhibits include original spa equipment, promotional pamphlets and personal accounts from patients who came seeking wellness. The museum also highlights Malvern’s surprising role in technological innovation: during the 20th century, the town became a centre for radar research, with displays featuring early instruments and wartime developments. Other galleries explore geology, local trades, and the cultural impact of the Malvern Hills. With its intimate rooms and rich storytelling, the museum offers a compact yet compelling journey through Worcestershire’s heritage.

Location

Malvern Museum of Local History is tucked into the heart of Great Malvern in Worcestershire, inside the old Priory Gatehouse on Abbey Road, Great Malvern, WR14 3ES. It sits right at the top of the town, between the Post Office and the Abbey Hotel, so it’s easy to find while wandering the streets. Just across the way stands Great Malvern Priory itself, a beautiful Norman and medieval church that once formed part of the same monastic complex. The Malvern Hills rise immediately behind the town, offering walks and wide views across the countryside. A short drive takes you to the Morgan Motor Company in Malvern Link, where you can see classic British sports cars still being built by hand. Further out is The Firs, Elgar’s Birthplace, a modest cottage that tells the story of the famous composer. Little Malvern Court and its gardens add another layer of local history, while Worcester Cathedral and the riverside city of Worcester make a pleasant longer outing if you have the time.
