Clan Macpherson Museum

About

The Clan Macpherson Museum in Newtonmore is a rich, characterful tribute to one of the Highlands’ most storied clans. Founded in the 1950s, it preserves centuries of artefacts that trace the Macphersons’ role in warfare, politics and cultural life, offering visitors a vivid sense of how clan identity shaped the region. Inside, one of the most striking displays is the collection of Jacobite memorabilia. Weapons, documents and personal items linked to the 1745 Rising highlight the clan’s loyalty to Bonnie Prince Charlie, including pieces associated with the famed Ewan Macpherson of Cluny. His dramatic escape and years spent in hiding are brought to life through portraits and rare objects. Traditional Highland dress is another highlight. You can see early tartans, sporrans, brooches and finely crafted weapons that reveal the artistry behind clan regalia. The museum also holds an impressive array of pipes and musical items, reflecting the Macphersons’ strong cultural traditions. Domestic artefacts, photographs and family records round out the story, showing how clan members lived, worked and travelled across the Highlands and beyond. The museum’s intimate scale makes these items feel personal, turning history into a series of human stories.
