Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre offers one of the Highlands’ most immersive and emotionally charged historical experiences. It stands beside the moor where, on 16 April 1746, the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated in a brutal, decisive battle that ended the last major uprising in Scotland. The centre’s design places visitors at the heart of this moment, blending archaeology, storytelling and atmospheric reconstruction. Inside, the exhibition unfolds chronologically, guiding you through the political tensions that led to the Rising, the Jacobite campaign, and the final clash on the moor. Original weapons, tartans, letters and personal belongings give the story a human scale. A standout feature is the 360‑degree immersive battle room, where sound and visuals recreate the chaos of the fight with striking intensity. Interactive maps and touchscreens explain troop movements and battlefield archaeology, revealing how researchers uncovered mass graves, musket balls and other evidence that shaped modern understanding of the battle. You can also explore detailed biographies of Highland clans, learning how families were drawn into the conflict and how its aftermath reshaped their lives.
