Inverness Botanic Gardens

About

Tucked away beside Bught Park in the Highland capital, Inverness Botanic Gardens is a surprising oasis of colour and exotic plant life. Opened in 1993, it holds the distinction of being the most northerly botanic garden in the United Kingdom, making it a fascinating destination where unusual plants thrive despite the northern location. The gardens occupy the former walled garden of historic Bught House, and today visitors can explore a variety of themed outdoor spaces filled with flowers, shrubs, specimen trees, ponds, and seasonal displays. Throughout the year the landscape changes dramatically, from vibrant spring bulbs and summer borders to colourful autumn foliage and attractive winter bark. One of the main attractions is the Tropical House, a warm and humid glasshouse packed with lush vegetation from around the world. Inside, visitors can wander among towering tropical plants, exotic flowers, waterfalls, and a pond populated by colourful koi carp. The atmosphere feels a world away from the Scottish Highlands and offers a glimpse into a rainforest environment. Equally impressive is the Cactus House, home to a remarkable collection of cacti and succulents. These unusual plants showcase nature’s incredible adaptations to arid climates and provide a striking contrast to the greenery of the Tropical House.
