Located in the historic Metropole Building on Market Street, Abertillery and District Museum is one of Blaenau Gwent's hidden gems. Run by dedicated local volunteers, the museum tells the fascinating story of Abertillery and the surrounding valleys, bringing to life the area's rich industrial, cultural and social heritage. Visitors can explore a wide-ranging collection that spans from prehistoric times to the modern day. Among the most interesting artefacts are a Bronze Age axe discovered near Cwmtillery, an Iron Age axe head, and a pistol believed to be connected to the Chartist movement. The museum also displays items linked to the coal and iron industries that shaped the community for generations. One of the highlights is the authentic miner's kitchen, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of local mining families. The museum also features photographs, documents, oral histories, trade union memorabilia, geological specimens, wartime displays and exhibits relating to the 1960 Six Bells mining disaster and the 1984-85 miners' strike. These displays provide a moving insight into the resilience and spirit of the local people. Another unique attraction is the museum's Italian-style café area, which includes an original early 20th-century marble soda fountain and counter rescued from a former Abertillery café.
