Laugharne Castle

About

Overlooking the beautiful Taf Estuary, Laugharne Castle is one of Wales' most distinctive historic landmarks. Unlike many medieval fortresses, it combines the remains of a Norman castle with the grandeur of an Elizabethan mansion, creating a fascinating blend of military and domestic architecture. The site has been occupied since the early 12th century and played an important role in the struggles between Welsh princes and Anglo-Norman lords. The castle is closely associated with the famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who found inspiration in Laugharne and wrote part of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog in the castle's summerhouse overlooking the estuary. This literary connection adds an extra layer of charm to an already remarkable site. Visitors can explore the impressive inner ward, medieval gatehouse and towering stone fortifications. Two large medieval towers dominate the skyline, while the remains of the Tudor mansion reveal how the fortress was transformed into an elegant residence during the 16th century by Sir John Perrot. The ruins of the grand hall, with its large windows facing the water, offer a glimpse of the castle's later life as a stately home. One of the most unusual features is the remarkable domed chamber inside the north-west tower.
