Holyhead Maritime Museum

About

Overlooking Newry Beach and Holyhead Harbour, Holyhead Maritime Museum is one of the most fascinating heritage attractions on Anglesey. Housed in what is believed to be the oldest purpose-built lifeboat station in Wales, dating from around 1858, the museum tells the story of a town whose fortunes have been shaped by the sea for centuries. Inside, visitors can explore a remarkable collection of maritime artefacts that bring Holyhead’s seafaring past to life. Exhibits cover everything from shipwrecks and lifeboat rescues to the important ferry routes linking Wales and Ireland. Detailed ship models, historic photographs, navigation equipment and personal stories reveal the challenges faced by sailors, fishermen and lifeboat crews who worked along this often treacherous coastline. One of the museum’s most intriguing features is its collection of objects recovered from local shipwrecks. These artefacts offer a glimpse into the many vessels lost around Anglesey’s shores and highlight the bravery of the crews who risked their lives in rescue operations. The exhibits also showcase Holyhead’s long-standing connection with maritime trade and travel across the Irish Sea.
