Menai Bridges Museum

About

Located in the town of Menai Bridge, the Menai Bridges Museum, also known as Menai Heritage, celebrates two of the most important engineering achievements in British history: the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge. Through interactive displays and fascinating artefacts, the museum tells the story of how these remarkable structures transformed travel between Anglesey and mainland Wales. The museum focuses on the pioneering work of two legendary engineers, Thomas Telford and Robert Stephenson. Visitors can discover how Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge, opened in 1826, became the first major suspension bridge in Britain and revolutionised transport across the dangerous waters of the Menai Strait. The later Britannia Bridge pushed engineering boundaries even further and became one of the most ambitious railway bridges of the Victorian era. Inside, exhibits include original bridge artefacts, engineering drawings, historic photographs and films showing the construction, reconstruction and development of the bridges over the years. Interactive displays allow visitors to test their engineering skills by building model bridges and exploring the challenges faced by the Victorian builders.
