St Davids Bishop’s Palace

About

St Davids Bishop’s Palace is one of the most magnificent medieval ruins in Wales, standing beside St Davids Cathedral in Britain’s smallest city. Built primarily during the 13th and 14th centuries, the palace was the residence of the powerful Bishops of St Davids, whose wealth and influence rivaled that of many noble families. Its impressive architecture was designed not only to provide comfort but also to demonstrate status and authority to pilgrims, clergy, and visiting dignitaries. Visitors are immediately struck by the palace’s grand stone ruins, particularly the remarkable Great Hall. Constructed by Bishop Henry de Gower, this vast space features an elegant rose window and beautifully designed arcades that showcase some of the finest examples of medieval architecture in Wales. Even in ruin, the hall conveys the scale and sophistication of the bishops’ former residence. Inside the complex, visitors can explore the remains of private apartments, service rooms, chapels, and courtyards that once formed a bustling center of religious and administrative life. The palace’s distinctive geometric patterns, carved stone details, and large windows reveal a level of luxury uncommon in many medieval buildings.
