Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery

About

Located in the heart of Brecon, Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery is one of Wales’s finest regional museums, showcasing the rich history, archaeology, art, and culture of the historic county of Brecknockshire. Today, it forms part of the impressive Y Gaer cultural centre, housed within the beautifully restored former Shire Hall, an elegant 19th-century building that once served as the county courthouse. One of the most fascinating features of the museum is its remarkable collection of local archaeological treasures. Visitors can see the famous Llangorse Lake logboat, an exceptionally rare early medieval vessel, as well as ancient carved stones, Roman artefacts, and objects that help tell the story of human life in the region over thousands of years. Art lovers will discover an outstanding gallery containing works by celebrated artists who were inspired by the landscapes of Mid Wales. The collection includes paintings and drawings by notable British artists, reflecting the beauty and character of the Brecon Beacons and surrounding countryside. A highlight of any visit is the restored Victorian courtroom within the former Shire Hall.
