Big Pit National Coal Museum

About

Big Pit National Coal Museum is one of Wales’ most remarkable heritage attractions, offering an unforgettable insight into the coal industry that shaped the nation for generations. Located in Blaenavon, Torfaen, on the site of a former working coal mine, the museum preserves the story of the miners whose hard work powered homes, factories and industries across Britain. The museum’s most famous experience is the underground tour, where visitors descend into the former mine workings accompanied by guides who are often former miners themselves. Their firsthand stories bring the harsh realities of life below ground vividly to life, explaining the challenges, dangers and camaraderie that defined the mining community. The descent offers a rare opportunity to experience the environment where thousands of miners once worked. Above ground, visitors can explore a range of original colliery buildings and exhibitions. Highlights include the winding engine house, blacksmith’s workshop, pithead baths and historic machinery that once kept the mine operating. Interactive displays and audiovisual presentations explain how coal was extracted, transported and processed, while also revealing the social history of mining families and communities.
