Elgin Cathedral

About

Founded in 1224 as the cathedral of the Diocese of Moray, it quickly became a symbol of wealth, power, and religious importance in northern Scotland. Its grandeur was so admired that a medieval bishop described it as the “glory of the kingdom.” Although now roofless, the cathedral remains breathtaking. As you enter, the striking west front immediately captures attention, with its twin towers, elegant Gothic stonework, and the remains of what was once a richly decorated entrance. Centuries ago, the building was filled with stained glass, painted decoration, and intricate carvings that reflected its status as one of Scotland’s finest churches. Inside, visitors can explore the vast nave and choir ruins, imagining the scale of medieval worship. One of the most fascinating features is the octagonal Chapter House, considered among the best-preserved in Scotland. Here, look for beautifully carved stone faces, mythical creatures, and a medieval reading lectern that has survived for centuries. The cathedral’s history is marked by drama. In 1390, it was attacked and burned by Alexander Stewart, the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, after a dispute with the bishop.

Location

Elgin Cathedral sits right in the heart of Elgin, the main town in Moray in the north-east of Scotland. You’ll find it on King Street, Elgin, Moray, IV30 1HU, just a short stroll from the town centre shops and streets.Even in its ruined state the old cathedral still draws people in with its soaring stone arches and quiet graveyard. Right beside it lies the peaceful Biblical Garden, a calm little spot filled with plants mentioned in the Bible. A short walk away you’ll come across the remains of the old Bishop’s House and the open green of Cooper Park.A couple of miles north stands Spynie Palace, once the grand fortified home of the bishops of Moray and still an impressive ruin to explore. A little further out, about four miles from town, Duffus Castle rises from the flat land, a classic medieval stronghold with plenty of atmosphere. Back in Elgin itself the Moray Motor Museum offers a completely different kind of history with its collection of classic cars and bikes, while the town’s own museum (when open) digs into local life and finds from the area. Lady Hill, at the far end of the High Street, carries the tall Duke of Gordon monument and the faint traces of the old castle that once stood there.
