Perched high above a dramatic bend of the River Neckar near Neckargemünd, Dilsberg Fortress is one of the most atmospheric medieval strongholds in Baden-Württemberg. Built around 1150 by the Counts of Lauffen, the fortress occupies a commanding hilltop position and later became an important residence and administrative centre of the Electoral Palatinate. What makes Dilsberg especially unique is that it forms part of a fortified village enclosed within medieval walls. Walking through its gates feels like stepping back in time, with narrow streets, historic buildings, and imposing fortifications creating an authentic medieval atmosphere. The fortress itself offers several fascinating features. One of the highlights is the enormous 46‑metre-deep castle well, which supplied water during long sieges. Hidden within the well shaft is the mysterious Brunnenstollen, an underground tunnel around 80 metres long. Once believed to be an escape route, it is now thought to have served as a ventilation passage. Exploring this subterranean corridor is one of the most memorable experiences at Dilsberg. Visitors can also climb the fortress tower and walk along sections of the impressive curtain walls, some rising more than 15 metres high. From these elevated viewpoints, breathtaking panoramas unfold across the Neckar Valley and the wooded hills of the Odenwald.
Neckargemünd-Dilsberg Germany
Dilsberg Fortress sits high on a hill above the Neckar valley in Baden-Württemberg, at Burghofweg 3a, 69151 Neckargemünd. This medieval stronghold, also known as Bergfeste Dilsberg, still has its walls, towers, and a deep well, and offers wide views over the river and the Odenwald hills. One of the most interesting parts is the underground tunnel that leads to the well, open in the warmer months. The small historic village of Dilsberg itself nestles right against the castle walls, with narrow streets and half-timbered houses. From the top of the keep you can see far along the Neckar, and nearby you will find other castles such as those around Neckarsteinach. Heidelberg is only a short distance away, and the valley invites easy walks or bike rides. It feels like a quiet, compact spot where the old fortress, the village, and the river views come together without any rush.
