Burg Guttenberg

About

Overlooking the Neckar Valley near Haßmersheim, Burg Guttenberg is one of Germany’s most remarkable medieval castles. Unlike many historic fortresses, it has never been destroyed and has been continuously inhabited for nearly 800 years, preserving much of its authentic character. The castle has been home to the Gemmingen family since the 15th century and remains one of the best-preserved castles in the region. Originally dating back to the Middle Ages, the castle stands high on a wooded hill with magnificent views across the Neckar landscape. As visitors pass through its gates, they enter a world of stone walls, towers, courtyards, and historic buildings that offer a genuine impression of life in a medieval stronghold. One of the main attractions inside is the castle museum, which presents the history of Burg Guttenberg and its noble residents. Exhibits include historic artefacts, armour, weapons, and displays that help bring centuries of castle life to life. Walking through the preserved interiors provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of knights and noble families. What truly sets Burg Guttenberg apart is the famous German Raptor Centre (Deutsche Greifenwarte). Here, visitors can see eagles, vultures, owls, and other birds of prey up close.
