Rising above the town of Lörrach near the Swiss border, Rötteln Castle (Burg Rötteln) is one of the most impressive medieval fortress ruins in southwestern Germany. Dating back to around the 11th century, it was once one of the strongest fortifications in the region and today ranks as the third-largest castle ruin in Baden. Perched on a wooded hill overlooking the Wiese Valley, the castle offers a commanding presence and magnificent views across the surrounding countryside. Rötteln served as the seat of the Lords of Rötteln and later the Margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg, playing a key role in the development of the historic Markgräflerland region. Over the centuries, the fortress expanded from a noble residence into a major administrative and military centre. Its importance gradually declined after the Thirty Years’ War, and it was finally destroyed during conflicts with French forces in 1678. Today, visitors can explore an extensive complex divided into an upper castle, lower castle, and outer bailey. Highlights include the mighty keep, massive defensive walls, gate towers, and the remains of the grand residential buildings. The upper castle contains the principal living quarters and fortifications, while the lower sections reveal how the fortress functioned as a self-contained medieval community.
