Perched dramatically on a limestone cliff high above the Upper Danube Valley, Wildenstein Castle (Burg Wildenstein) is one of the most spectacular and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. Built between the 13th and early 14th centuries, the fortress overlooks the famous Danube breakthrough through the Swabian Alb, standing more than 200 metres above the river and commanding breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Unlike many medieval castles, Wildenstein has survived largely intact. Extensive fortifications added during the early 16th century transformed it into a modern fortress of its time, and much of the exterior still appears almost exactly as it did after these renovations were completed in 1554. The castle’s defensive design is particularly impressive, with steep rock faces, drawbridge access, and a massive neck ditch cut through solid rock to protect the entrance. Inside, visitors can discover one of the castle’s most remarkable treasures: large Renaissance wall paintings created between 1538 and 1540. These colourful artworks feature floral decorations, birds, and scenes from the medieval Sigenot legend, making them among the castle’s most important historic features.
