Hirschhorn Castle

About

Although located in the town of Hirschhorn in Hesse, just beside the Baden-Württemberg border, Hirschhorn Castle is one of the most picturesque strongholds of the Neckar Valley. Rising above the medieval old town and the river below, the castle has dominated the landscape for more than seven centuries and remains one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region. The fortress was established around the 13th century and was strategically positioned to control traffic along the Neckar Valley as well as the nearby Finkenbach and Ulfenbach valleys. Over the centuries, it expanded into a large complex consisting of a main castle, upper bailey, and lower bailey, protected by formidable walls, towers, and gateways. Visitors can explore many surviving sections of the castle, including the impressive medieval palas, a Renaissance extension known as the Hatzfeld Building, and the 26-metre-high keep that towers above the complex. One of the most striking defensive features is the massive shield wall, built behind a deep neck ditch to protect the most vulnerable side of the fortress.
