Rising above the rolling hills of the Kraichgau near Sinsheim, Burg Steinsberg is one of the most distinctive medieval castles in southern Germany. Standing on the summit of an extinct volcanic cone 333 metres above sea level, the fortress dominates the surrounding landscape and has long been known as the “Compass of the Kraichgau” because it can be seen from great distances. The castle’s origins date back to at least 1109, but its most remarkable feature was added during the Staufer period in the 12th and 13th centuries. Burg Steinsberg is famous for its unusual octagonal keep, one of the finest examples of its kind in Germany. Built as a symbol of imperial Staufer power, the tower is often compared to the famous Castel del Monte in southern Italy because of its distinctive geometric design. Visitors entering the castle can explore the impressive remains of the medieval complex, including the massive ring walls, courtyards, residential buildings, and defensive structures. The octagonal keep is the highlight of any visit. Climbing the tower rewards visitors with spectacular panoramic views across the vineyards, forests, and villages of the Kraichgau, extending toward the Odenwald and Palatinate regions on clear days.
