Stadtmuseum im Gelben Haus

About

Located in the heart of Esslingen’s beautifully preserved historic center, the Stadtmuseum im Gelben Haus offers a fascinating journey through the history of one of southern Germany’s most important medieval cities. The museum is housed in the distinctive “Yellow House” at Hafenmarkt and incorporates a remarkable stone residential tower from the 13th century, the only surviving medieval tower house of its kind in Esslingen. The permanent exhibition traces the story of Esslingen from its first documented mention in the year 777 through to the twentieth century. Visitors discover how the city developed from a small settlement into a wealthy Free Imperial City, renowned for its wine trade, craftsmanship, and commercial importance. Historical artifacts, documents, household objects, and personal belongings bring everyday life in past centuries vividly to life. One of the most interesting sections focuses on Esslingen’s medieval golden age. Exhibits explore the power of local guilds, merchant networks, and the thriving wine industry that helped shape the city’s prosperity. A detailed city model showing Esslingen around 1770 allows visitors to imagine how the town appeared before modern development transformed it.
