Freilichtmuseum Beuren

About

Nestled at the foot of the Swabian Alb, the Freilichtmuseum Beuren is one of Baden-Württemberg’s most charming open-air museums. Spread across a picturesque landscape of orchards, meadows, and traditional farmsteads, the museum brings rural life from past centuries vividly back to life. More than twenty historic buildings from the Middle Neckar region and the Swabian Alb have been carefully dismantled, relocated, and reconstructed here to create an authentic museum village. Walking through the museum feels like stepping into a village from another era. Visitors can explore original farmhouses, barns, workshops, village buildings, and craftsmen’s homes, each furnished with period objects that illustrate everyday life in rural Württemberg. Highlights include a traditional weaver’s house, a carpenter’s workshop, a photo studio, a bakery, a washhouse, and even an old village hall with a teacher’s apartment. One of the museum’s most appealing features is its living atmosphere. Heritage gardens and fields showcase traditional crops once grown in the region, while sheep, goats, chickens, geese, rabbits, and other farm animals help recreate the character of a historic farming community.
