Hohenloher Freilandmuseum

About

Located in the village of Wackershofen near Schwäbisch Hall, the Hohenloher Freilandmuseum is one of the largest and most impressive open-air museums in Baden-Württemberg. Spread across a vast rural landscape, it recreates the region’s past with more than seventy historic buildings that have been carefully dismantled, moved from their original locations, and rebuilt on the museum grounds. A visit feels like stepping into a living village from centuries ago. Farmhouses, barns, mills, workshops, chapels, schools, inns, a railway station, and even a former prison tell the story of everyday life in Hohenlohe and Franconia from the late Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Each building is furnished with authentic objects, allowing visitors to see how families lived, worked, and adapted to changing times. One of the museum’s most fascinating features is its diversity. The collection includes buildings from farming communities, wine-growing regions, forest landscapes, and small rural settlements. Traditional craft demonstrations, historical tools, and original interiors bring the past to life, while exhibitions explain agricultural techniques, household customs, and local traditions.
