Elztalmuseum

About

Located in the charming town of Waldkirch at the edge of the Black Forest, the Elztalmuseum offers a fascinating blend of regional history, music, and craftsmanship. Housed in a magnificent 18th-century Baroque building that once formed part of the St. Margarethen monastery complex, the museum combines historic architecture with modern exhibitions across four floors. The museum is best known for its outstanding collection of mechanical musical instruments. Waldkirch became internationally famous during the 19th century as a center for the manufacture of fairground organs, barrel organs, orchestrions, and other automatic musical devices. Visitors can admire beautifully decorated instruments and, during guided demonstrations, hear their impressive sounds come to life. One of the highlights is the collection of historic fairground and concert organs built by renowned Waldkirch workshops. Particularly remarkable is the modern organ Altobella Furiosa, an extraordinary instrument capable of reproducing the sound of an entire orchestra and designed in collaboration with artist Otmar Alt.
