The Jägerhof in Dresden is the oldest surviving Renaissance building in the city’s Neustadt and a monument to Saxony’s cultural heritage. Originally built in the late 16th century as a hunting lodge for the electors, it once formed part of a larger complex that reflected the prestige of the Saxon court. Over the centuries, the building served many purposes, from military use to civic functions, before being heavily damaged during the Second World War. Rebuilt in the early 1950s, it became the first museum in Dresden to reopen after the destruction of 1945. Today, the Jägerhof houses the Museum für Sächsische Volkskunst and the Puppentheatersammlung, offering visitors a unique insight into regional traditions, craftsmanship, and one of the world’s largest collections of historic puppet theatre. Its atmospheric halls display everything from Ore Mountain woodcarvings and Sorbian costumes to intricate lacework and toys, making the Jägerhof both a cultural landmark and a living archive of Saxon folk art.
Dresden Germany
The Jägerhof is located at Köpckestraße 1 in Dresden’s Innere Neustadt, just a few minutes’ walk from iconic landmarks such as the Residenzschloss (Royal Palace) and the Semperoper opera house. This historic building, dating back over 400 years, now houses the Museum of Saxon Folk Art and the Puppentheatersammlung, showcasing a rich collection of regional folk art, traditional costumes, and historic puppetry. The area surrounding Jägerhof offers a vibrant cultural atmosphere with charming streets, cafés, and easy access via tram lines to Neustädter Markt. Its central location in the Neustadt district provides visitors with both a deep dive into Saxon heritage and convenient access to Dresden’s broader artistic and historical attractions.
