Folkparken

About

Folkparken is one of Norrköping’s most cherished public parks, a green retreat that has served as a gathering place for leisure and community life since the early 20th century. Created during the rise of Sweden’s folk park movement, it was designed as an accessible recreational space where residents could enjoy nature, culture and social events. Its spacious lawns, mature trees and winding paths give the park a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that contrasts with the city’s industrial heritage. Over the decades, Folkparken has hosted concerts, festivals and outdoor theatre, becoming a cultural stage as much as a place for everyday recreation. Playgrounds, open areas for picnics and seasonal activities make it a favourite destination for families, while its natural setting offers quiet corners for walking or simply unwinding. Today the park remains an important part of Norrköping’s social fabric, valued for its blend of history, greenery and community spirit. It continues to embody the ideals of the folk park tradition: a shared space where people of all ages can meet, relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Location

Folkparken is located on the western edge of Norrköping’s city center, stretching along the northern banks of the Motala Ström river. This expansive green oasis serves as the city’s primary urban park, acting as a natural transition between the bustling central districts and the quieter residential areas to the west. It is easily accessible on foot or by the city’s iconic yellow trams, making it a central gathering point for both locals and visitors seeking recreation and nature within the urban environment. The area surrounding Folkparken is packed with diverse attractions that highlight Norrköping’s unique blend of history and modern culture. Standing guard at the park's eastern entrance is the magnificent Matteus kyrka, a Neo-Gothic red-brick church with a soaring spire that serves as a major local landmark. Just a short walk from the park’s pathways, you enter the famous Industrial Landscape, where you can visit the Museum of Work, currently featuring a fascinating exhibition on UFOs and paranormal phenomena. Nearby, the Visualiseringscenter C offers immersive 3D dome shows and high-tech interactive science exhibits.
