Tonbridge Castle

About

Tonbridge Castle is one of England’s finest surviving motte‑and‑bailey fortifications, its history stretching back to the aftermath of the Norman Conquest. The great 13th‑century gatehouse dominates the site, its twin towers and thick stone walls conveying both strength and elegance. Beyond it, the remains of the medieval castle rise above the River Medway, offering views across the town and the surrounding landscape. Inside the grounds, visitors can explore atmospheric ruins, landscaped lawns, and traces of the original earthworks that reveal how the fortress once controlled this strategic crossing. The blend of military architecture, riverside setting, and centuries of local history gives Tonbridge Castle a distinctive character, making it a compelling place to experience the layered story of Kent’s past.
