Mesnaelva

About

Mesnaelva flows through Lillehammer as a quiet, green corridor that reveals the city’s natural heart. The river begins in the hills above and winds down through shaded paths, wooden bridges, and steep ravines shaped by centuries of rushing water. Its cascades and small waterfalls create a constant, soothing soundscape that draws walkers, runners, and photographers throughout the year. In spring and summer, the banks burst with greenery, while autumn paints the valley in deep golds and reds. Winter transforms the river into a serene, icy landscape framed by snow‑covered trees. Mesnaelva offers an easy escape from the urban centre, inviting visitors to follow its winding trail and experience Lillehammer’s blend of nature, history, and calm.

Location

Mesnaelva, or the Mesna River, runs through Lillehammer from Lake Mesnavatnet down toward the town centre and on into the Mjøsa lake landscape. The river corridor is easily accessed from several points in the town, including by the swimming area at Stampesletta, Nordseter, and along the Mesna Cultural Trail that winds uphill from the urban core into the surrounding hills. Along the river, the Mesna Cultural Trail offers a peaceful walk through forests, past small waterfalls and pools, and across Collett’s Bridge, with interpretive signs that recount the area’s industrial and cultural history. Close by is the popular Badedammen outdoor pool at Stampesletta, where visitors can enjoy open‑air swimming before continuing along the river path. Nearby too is the Olympic Park area, which includes the ski‑jumping hills and the Lillehammer bobsleigh and luge track, making it easy to combine a stroll along Mesnaelva with a visit to the town’s major winter‑sport landmarks. In the wider neighbourhood, guest‑favourite spots such as Maihaugen open‑air museum, Hunderfossen Adventure Park, and Lillehammer’s lakeside promenade are all within a short drive or bus ride, giving visitors a natural riverside starting point for a full day of nature and culture in Lillehammer.
