Windsor & Royal Borough Museum

About

The Windsor & Royal Borough Museum is a small but captivating local history museum housed within the elegant Windsor Guildhall, a building with royal connections dating back to the late 17th century. Opened in 2011, the museum was created to showcase the stories of Windsor and the wider borough, from prehistoric settlements to the modern royal era. One of the most interesting aspects of the museum is its setting. The Guildhall itself was partly designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and its council chamber has hosted royal events, including the civil weddings of Prince Charles and Camilla, and Sir Elton John. This historic backdrop adds depth to the museum’s displays. Inside, the collection highlights everyday life in the borough: Roman artefacts, medieval tools, Victorian household items, and objects linked to Windsor’s long military and royal traditions. The museum also explores the town’s relationship with Windsor Castle, the Thames, and Eton, offering a broader picture of local identity.
