Boarstall Tower

About

Boarstall Tower is a rare surviving fragment of a once‑formidable medieval manor, standing proudly in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Built in 1312, the tower originally served as the fortified gatehouse to Boarstall House, a moated estate granted to the FitzNigel family. Its thick stone walls, battlements, and imposing archway reflect a period when even rural homes required strong defences. One of the most interesting chapters in its history came during the English Civil War, when the tower and its surrounding estate were fiercely contested. Royalist forces fortified Boarstall, but after repeated sieges it eventually fell to Parliamentarian troops. Local legend claims that Lady Denham, a determined Royalist, defended the tower with remarkable courage before being forced to surrender. Although the main house was demolished in the 18th century, the gatehouse survived and was later adapted into a comfortable residence, blending medieval strength with later domestic touches. Today, Boarstall Tower is valued for its atmospheric interiors, spiral staircases, and the sense of stepping directly into England’s turbulent past.
