Livonian Order Castle

About

The Livonian Order Castle in Ventspils is one of Latvia’s oldest surviving medieval fortresses and the city’s most significant historic landmark. Built in the late 13th century as a stronghold of the Livonian Order, it guarded the Venta River and the developing port, becoming a key military and administrative centre on the Baltic coast. Its thick stone walls, austere courtyard, and defensive towers reflect the architectural style of early crusader castles in the region. Over the centuries, the castle changed roles many times. After the decline of the Order, it served as a ducal residence, later becoming a prison and even a Soviet military facility. One of the most interesting facts is that during renovations in the 1990s, archaeologists uncovered medieval frescoes hidden beneath layers of plaster—rare surviving examples of sacred art from the period. Today the castle houses the Ventspils Museum, where interactive exhibitions trace the city’s maritime history, local traditions, and archaeological discoveries. Its restored tower offers panoramic views over the old town and port, making the castle not only a monument of medieval power but also a vibrant cultural centre connecting Ventspils’ past with its present.
