Bauska Lutheran Church of St. Spirit

About

Bauska Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit is one of the town’s most historically significant Protestant landmarks, reflecting centuries of spiritual life in the Zemgale region. Its origins date back to the 16th century, when Lutheranism spread through the Duchy of Courland and reshaped local religious traditions. The present church building, with its simple yet dignified architecture, embodies the modest elegance typical of Latvian Lutheran churches. An interesting fact is that the church once served not only as a place of worship but also as a community hub, hosting gatherings, school activities, and charitable work. Its tower, visible from afar, long acted as a point of orientation for travellers approaching Bauska. Inside, the church preserves wooden furnishings crafted by local artisans and a historic organ that continues to accompany services and concerts. The church has survived fires, wars, and political upheavals, including periods of restricted religious activity during the 20th century. Thanks to dedicated parish members, many original objects were preserved and later restored. Today, Bauska Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit remains an active congregation and a quiet guardian of the town’s cultural and spiritual heritage, linking past and present through faith and community life.

Location

Bauska Lutheran Church of St. Spirit is located in the heart of Bauska, a town in southern Latvia about an hour’s drive from Riga. You’ll find it on Town Hall Square, surrounded by the historic center and just a short walk from the Mēmele River. Built in the late 16th century and rebuilt in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest stone buildings in Bauska. The church features a simple yet elegant Baroque exterior with a tall, slender tower that has long served as a landmark for the town. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful, with whitewashed walls, wooden pews, and a historic pipe organ. The church remains active and often hosts concerts and community events, especially during holidays and summer festivals. Right next to the church is Town Hall Square, the social hub of Old Town, where you can see the restored Town Hall building and small shops and cafés. Just a few minutes’ walk away stands Bauska Castle, set on a peninsula where the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers meet. The castle combines 15th-century fortress ruins with a Renaissance ducal palace, and its tower offers wide views of the surrounding valleys. A short drive from Bauska takes you to Rundāle Palace, known as the “Versailles of Latvia,” with its Baroque halls, gilded interiors, and extensive French gardens filled with roses and fountains. Also nearby is Mežotne Palace, a neoclassical manor set in an English landscape park on the Lielupe River, perfect for a quiet walk.
