Nantwich Museum

About

Nantwich Museum offers an intimate journey through one of Cheshire’s most historic market towns, revealing stories shaped by salt, fire, craftsmanship, and community resilience. Housed in the former Wesleyan Chapel, the museum stands close to the medieval heart of Nantwich, a town once famed for its salt production and later rebuilt after the devastating Great Fire of 1583. Inside, one of the most interesting displays explores Nantwich’s salt‑making heritage, showing how brine springs fuelled local industry for centuries. Tools, maps, and reconstructed equipment illustrate the demanding work that shaped the town’s early economy. The “Great Fire” gallery is another highlight, presenting charred artefacts, eyewitness accounts, and models that show how the town rose from destruction with its distinctive timber‑framed architecture. Visitors can also see fine examples of local craftsmanship, including Nantwich’s celebrated Tudor carvings and decorative plasterwork. The museum’s Roman finds, Civil War relics, and collections of ceramics and textiles add further layers to the town’s long story. Small but rich in detail, Nantwich Museum offers a thoughtful, atmospheric look at a community shaped by industry, disaster, and creativity
