Bollington Discovery Centre

About

Bollington Discovery Centre is a welcoming community‑run museum that brings the story of this former mill town to life. Set inside the historic Clarence Mill beside the Macclesfield Canal, it offers an engaging introduction to Bollington’s industrial past, its creative spirit and the people who shaped the town’s identity. Inside, visitors can explore displays on the cotton‑spinning industry that once dominated the area, including tools, photographs and personal stories from mill workers. One of the most interesting features is the detailed model of Bollington during its industrial peak, showing how mills, canals and railways transformed a rural settlement into a bustling manufacturing hub. Exhibits also highlight the town’s unique landmarks, such as White Nancy, the iconic hilltop monument built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. The centre includes information on local geology, canal engineering and the social history of everyday life in Bollington. Volunteers are often on hand to share insights, making the experience warm and personal. Its location within Clarence Mill adds to the charm, with views over the canal and easy access to walking routes.
