Trakai Island Castle is one of Lithuania’s most iconic landmarks, rising from Lake Galvė like a perfectly preserved medieval fortress. Completed in the 15th century under Grand Duke Vytautas, it served as both a defensive stronghold and a ducal residence, symbolising the political power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its island setting made it nearly impregnable, and today it remains one of the few water‑castles in Europe restored to its original splendour. Inside, visitors can explore vaulted halls, narrow stairways and towers that once hosted diplomatic meetings and royal ceremonies. The castle houses exhibitions from the Trakai History Museum, showcasing armour, weapons, coins and archaeological finds that reveal the daily life of medieval nobility. Particularly fascinating is the grand ducal hall, reconstructed to reflect its historical appearance, and the displays dedicated to the multicultural communities that shaped Trakai, including the Karaims. The upper floors offer views across the lake, while the courtyards bring the atmosphere of medieval Lithuania vividly to life. Trakai Island Castle is located in Trakai, on an island in Lake Galvė, reached by a long wooden bridge. It is the town’s most famous landmark and one of the most photographed castles in Lithuania, combining medieval architecture with a scenic lakeside setting. Nearby, visitors can explore Trakai History Museum, which is inside the castle complex and gives a deeper look into the region’s past. The Karaite quarter is also close, where traditional wooden houses, the Karaite Ethnographic Museum, and the Karaite Kenesa show the multicultural heritage of Trakai. Lake Galvė itself is a major attraction, and boat trips are popular in warm weather. Around the castle, there are walking paths, viewpoints, and peaceful shores that make the area ideal for a relaxed visit. Trakai town centre is also nearby, with cafés and places to try kibinai, the well-known Karaite pastries.
