Windermere Jetty Museum

About

Windermere Jetty Museum is one of the Lake District’s most atmospheric museums, dedicated to the region’s long relationship with boats, craftsmanship and life on the water. Rebuilt in striking contemporary architecture on the shores of Windermere, it offers a rare blend of heritage and modern design. An interesting fact is that the museum houses steam launches, sailing boats and motor vessels dating back over 200 years, many of which were rescued from the lake itself and painstakingly restored. Inside, visitors can explore beautifully displayed historic boats, including SL Dolly, believed to be the world’s oldest mechanically powered boat still in existence. Workshops with glass walls allow you to watch conservation teams at work, preserving wooden hulls and steam engines using traditional techniques. Interactive exhibits explain how Windermere became a centre for leisure boating, engineering and early tourism.

Location

Windermere Jetty Museum is located at Rayrigg Road in Bowness-on-Windermere, right on the eastern shore of Windermere in the Lake District, Cumbria. The museum sits directly on the water with its own wet dock, slipway, and jetties, so historic boats are displayed both inside and afloat. The modern copper-clad building was designed to frame views of the lake and fells. You’re in Bowness-on-Windermere, the main visitor hub for the lake. Windermere Lake Cruises piers are a short walk away, with boats running to Ambleside at the north end and Lakeside at the south. From Lakeside you can join the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway through woodland. A 10-minute stroll takes you into Bowness town center for shops, ice cream, and The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. Walk north along the shore to reach Cockshott Point, a quiet park with picnic spots and lake access. Drive 20 minutes to reach Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s 17th-century farmhouse near Near Sawrey, or head to Ambleside for Bridge House, Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, and mountain walks. For gardens, Brockhole on Windermere has treetop nets, boat hire, and lakeside grounds, just up the road from the museum.
