Solway Aviation Museum

About

Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle Airport is a dynamic tribute to Britain’s Cold War aviation heritage, with an impressive outdoor aircraft collection and engaging indoor exhibits. One interesting fact is that the museum is home to a rare Avro Vulcan bomber, one of the most iconic aircraft of the nuclear deterrent era, which visitors can walk right up to for a close look at its dramatic delta wings. Inside, the museum explores the history of RAF operations in Cumbria, featuring uniforms, instruments, engines and personal stories from aircrew and ground staff. The cockpit collection is a highlight, allowing visitors to peer into the cramped, instrument‑packed spaces of classic jets. Exhibits on radar, air‑defence systems and Cold War tensions reveal how the region played a strategic role in national security. The museum also preserves memorabilia from local airfields, including wartime photographs and artefacts that bring the human side of aviation history to life.

Location

Solway Aviation Museum is located at Carlisle Lake District Airport, just east of Carlisle in Cumbria, on the edge of the northern Lake District. The museum occupies former RAF hangars and the old control tower on what was a WWII airfield, giving it an authentic atmosphere. It’s run by volunteers and focuses on aviation history in Cumbria and the wider region. You’re 6 miles from Carlisle city center, a historic border city with plenty to see. Carlisle Castle is a medieval fortress that housed Mary Queen of Scots, and right next to it is Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery with Roman, Border Reiver, and natural history collections. Carlisle Cathedral has a stunning ceiling and medieval painted panels. Hadrian’s Wall runs close by, with sites like Birdoswald Roman Fort and Lanercost Priory within a 30-minute drive. To the south, the northern Lake District starts quickly – Caldbeck Fells and Skiddaw are about 20 minutes away for walking and village pubs. For family days out, Talkin Tarn Country Park is nearby with a glacial lake, woodland walks, and boat hire. Head north and you cross into Scotland, with Gretna Green and its famous blacksmith’s shop just over the border. And if you want more aviation, RAF Spadeadam is the only RAF base in Cumbria, though not open to the public, its history features heavily in the museum.
