Wolfgangsee Lake

About

Wolfgangsee is one of the most iconic lakes of the Salzkammergut, celebrated for its deep blue water, dramatic mountain backdrop, and centuries‑old cultural traditions. Straddling the borders of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Strobl, it has long been a crossroads of pilgrimage, trade, and tourism. Its name is tied to Saint Wolfgang, whose legendary axe‑throw is said to have determined the site of the nearby church. What makes the lake especially fascinating is its blend of nature and heritage. The water is exceptionally clear, fed by mountain springs, and reaches impressive depths of over 100 metres. Steamboat travel has been part of life here since the 19th century, and the historic paddle steamer Kaiser Franz Josef I still operates, offering a nostalgic way to experience the lake. Visitors can explore the lakeside promenade, admire traditional boathouses, and watch the famous SchafbergBahn cog railway climb toward panoramic viewpoints. Inside St. Wolfgang itself, many cafés and inns open directly onto the water, giving a sense of living at the edge of both village and lake.
