Falkensteinkirche

Falkensteinkirche is one of the most atmospheric pilgrimage sites around St. Wolfgang, hidden high above the lake along the old path to St. Gilgen. According to legend, Saint Wolfgang himself sought refuge in a cave here during a hermit retreat in the 10th century. The chapel that later rose on this dramatic cliffside became a place of prayer for travellers and pilgrims who followed his footsteps. Inside, the church is small but full of character. The main altar features a vivid depiction of St. Wolfgang, often shown with an axe—the symbol of the miraculous moment when he struck the ground and the foundations of St. Wolfgang’s future church were revealed. The interior walls preserve devotional paintings and inscriptions left by pilgrims over centuries, giving the space a raw, authentic feel. The rocky niche behind the altar, believed to be connected to the saint’s hermitage, adds a unique natural element rarely found in Alpine chapels. What makes Falkensteinkirche unforgettable is its setting: the narrow path, the sudden views over Wolfgangsee, and the sense of stepping into a place shaped equally by nature and faith.
