Most Mehmed Paše Sokolovića in Višegrad is one of the most celebrated Ottoman monuments in the Balkans, a 16th‑century masterpiece designed by the famed architect Mimar Sinan. Commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović—born nearby in the village of Sokolovići—the bridge became both a symbol of imperial engineering and a cultural icon immortalised in literature. Its 11 elegant arches stretch across the Drina River, creating a perfect rhythm of stone and water. Inside the structure—meaning within its architectural details—you can observe Sinan’s precision. The central arch is noticeably higher, allowing the bridge to withstand the Drina’s powerful seasonal currents. The kapia, a small stone terrace halfway across, is one of its most interesting features. Historically, travellers rested here, merchants exchanged news, and locals gathered to watch the river. Today, it remains the best viewpoint, offering a serene panorama of Višegrad and the surrounding hills. The bridge’s limestone blocks, fitted without mortar, reveal the engineering mastery of the era. Subtle inscriptions and carved details still survive, adding layers of history to the walk across.
