Museum of beekeeping, Sremski Karlovci

Museum of Beekeeping “Professor Jovan Živanović” in Sremski Karlovci is a delightful and unusual attraction, celebrating one of Serbia’s most influential apiculture pioneers. Živanović, a professor, innovator, and passionate beekeeper, helped modernise honey production in the late 19th century and introduced techniques that shaped beekeeping across the region. His family home, now a museum, preserves this legacy with warmth and authenticity. Inside, visitors can explore original beekeeping tools, wooden hives, protective gear, and early honey‑processing equipment. One of the most interesting exhibits is Živanović’s experimental hive design, which improved colony health and honey yield. The museum also displays handwritten notes, correspondence, and photographs documenting his scientific work and travels, offering insight into how he connected Serbian beekeeping with European practices. A charming highlight is the tasting room, where visitors can sample different types of honey produced by the Živanović family for generations. The cellar holds traditional barrels used for honey wine, a local specialty that reflects Karlovci’s long tradition of craftsmanship.
