Cathedral of St. Nicholas is the spiritual heart of Sremski Karlovci, a magnificent 18th‑century Orthodox church built between 1758 and 1762. Its architecture reflects the Baroque style of the Habsburg era, yet its soul is unmistakably Serbian, making it one of the most important ecclesiastical monuments in Vojvodina. The cathedral served as the seat of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci, giving it a central role in shaping Serbian religious and cultural life. Inside, the cathedral’s greatest treasure is its monumental iconostasis, carved by master woodworkers and painted by Teodor Kračun, one of the most celebrated Serbian artists of the period. His icons—radiant, expressive, and richly detailed—are considered masterpieces of 18th‑century sacred art. The interior also features frescoes, gilded ornamentation, and finely crafted liturgical objects that reveal the wealth and influence of Karlovci’s clergy. Visitors can admire the marble floors, elegant chandeliers, and the serene atmosphere created by centuries of worship. The cathedral also preserves important relics and historical documents connected to the Serbian Orthodox Church’s struggle for autonomy under the Habsburg Monarchy.

Standing directly on the main square, stepping outside places you right next to several of the town's most iconic historical sites. Directly adjacent to the cathedral is the Patriarchal Court, an elegant 19th-century palace that serves as the seat of the Srem Eparchy and houses a rich treasury of religious art. Just across the square sits the Karlovci Grammar School, the oldest secondary school in Serbia, while the famous Four Lions Fountain rests at the square's center. A short walk away, you can explore the Museum of Beekeeping and Winery Živanović to sample traditional local Bermet wine, or visit the ethno-museum Zavičajna kuća. Strolling up the nearby hill leads to the historic Chapel of Peace, built on the site of the 1699 treaty signing. With the forested hills of Fruška Gora National Park surrounding the town and the imposing Petrovaradin Fortress just a short drive away in Novi Sad, the cathedral is an essential stop while exploring the region.
