The Cathedral of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is one of Lovech’s most impressive modern Orthodox landmarks, completed in 2007 yet deeply rooted in Bulgaria’s spiritual tradition. Dedicated to the two brothers who created the Slavic alphabet, the cathedral symbolizes cultural identity as much as faith. Its architecture blends contemporary clarity with classic Orthodox forms: a tall central dome, clean stone façades, and wide arches that give the building a calm, monumental presence. Inside, the cathedral reveals its most captivating features. The iconostasis stretches across the sanctuary in carved wood and gold leaf, filled with icons painted specifically for the cathedral by Bulgarian artists. Look for the large icon of the saintly brothers holding the Glagolitic script—an image that connects liturgy with literacy. The frescoes are still relatively new, but their bright colors and detailed scenes stand out, especially the depiction of Christ Pantocrator beneath the dome. Another interesting detail is the spacious nave, designed to accommodate major church celebrations. Its acoustics are excellent; during services, chants resonate warmly under the dome.

Location

The Cathedral of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is located right in the center of Lovech, in northern Bulgaria. You will find it at 1 Targovska Street, 5500 Lovech, on a small square just above the main pedestrian street. It is the biggest Orthodox church in the city and you can see its domes from almost everywhere in the center, so it is very easy to find. It is a perfect starting point for sightseeing because everything is close by. In just a couple of minutes on foot you reach the famous Covered Bridge with its small craft shops and the Osam River promenade. If you go up a little, you enter the historic Varosha quarter with its cobbled streets, the Deli Hamam Museum, the Ethnographic Complex and the Drasova and Rashova Houses. Very close are also the Vasil Levski Museum, the Lovech Art Gallery and the Regional Historical Museum. And right above the cathedral, on the hill, is Hisarya Fortress, the old medieval citadel with a great view over the whole town.
