Alley "Bash Bunar" Lovech

Bash Bunar is one of Lovech’s most beloved natural promenades, a peaceful riverside alley that follows the cool, shaded banks of the Osam. Its name comes from Turkish, meaning “head spring,” referring to the abundant water sources that once fed the area. Today, it’s a favorite walking route for locals who appreciate its blend of nature, history, and quiet charm. The alley stretches through a narrow gorge, where limestone cliffs rise dramatically on both sides. This creates a refreshing microclimate—on hot days, Bash Bunar feels noticeably cooler thanks to the river breeze and dense vegetation. Along the path, you’ll find small springs and stone fountains, some dating back to the Ottoman period. These fountains are among the alley’s most interesting features, each with its own story and inscription. Inside the area, visitors can enjoy several scenic spots: wooden bridges crossing the river, benches tucked under old trees, and viewpoints where the cliffs reflect beautifully in the water. Birdlife is abundant, and early mornings often bring herons and kingfishers close to the shore.
